Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) – The Power of the Missing Link

seoYou have been blogging so hard and studious that you thought you deserved a lot more visitors than what you already had. Fair enough. But it is not just the quality of what you have written that is going to matter, nor is it the richness of contents that would get you the traffic. Remember, you are one among the few thousand other bloggers that have written on the same subject and have similar expectations. So, how would you mark yourself as different from the rest of the cyber crowd?

If you have been blogging for a while now and have had articles written on a range of topics, you need to do a simple exercise. Let’s say you have posted on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). That is, technically, a keyword, one that is being sought after by people who search the net for information on SEO. Perhaps, you had written an article on SEO a few months back.

Since it has already been a while, you may add to that article or expand on that post with a new post (repeating the same post again seldom makes sense, as you may appreciate). You may throw light on a different aspect of SEO that may not have been the focus of your previous article. You may give a different shade to your new post, a new point mentioned, or a slightly different perspective. With that done, link the key word in the new post to the old one.

Search Engines work by analysing posts for the importance that they hold and their reference power, checking for other posts that link to articles. Search engines do not just look for key words but also estimate the importance of posts with the links they get, even if it were from the same blog. If you overlooked the significance of self-linking, think again.

If you are ranked the 20th or the 30th in rankings of web page results for search key words, the traffic you get may be statistically insignificant. However, the trick is to get it to the first page and to move it up the rankings so that it stands the first. Not all blogs can do it – there is only one first place. But to realise the importance of strategically placed accurate keywords and the role that links play in your search rankings would take you a few notches up in the results page.
