How User-Friendly is Your Blog?

blogging-readerIt is important to look at what you do. We’re talking of blogging, of course. Sometimes, writers get so engrossed in their works and their creative mind gets bubbling with energy and ideas that fingers try hard to keep pace with the dancing words. That’s a good sign, especially considering such esoteric phenomena as the Writer’s Block that tend to create a void where writers run out of ideas and get lost for a while. That may not be a good sign in the blogging world, though.

It is important to keep a check on what’s happening and how well things are going in one’s blog. In other words, the blogger would be well advised to sit back and take a leisurely look at his works every now and then, not just as a recall exercise or a session to reflect upon, but to visualise and empathise. What would the blog look like in the eyes of a reader? Am I on the right track, conveying the right messages to my reader? Do my string of posts and stream of thoughts make sense? Is the blog layout warm and friendly? Are the contents readable and easy on the eye? Are there any changes that I can do with regard to positioning of the links in the sidebar? Are my external links still working fine?

These are minor things that, when taken care of, would lead to a much better reader experience. Consider, for instance, the speed at which your site loads with all its bells and whistles. You may not realise it yourself if you were working on high speed broadband that is capable of streaming videos to your system, but not all of your readers would be using high-end connectivity. You wouldn’t want to make your page load a frustrating experience for your reader.

Such Speed Tests as the one at Pingdom Tools helps you know your blog better on its user-friendliness. You may check different aspects of your blog as the time it takes to load completely including all objects, internal and external, that would give you a fair idea of how bulky your blog actually is. You may then go on to find out what is it that actually slows your blog down and do the needful.

We spend so much time and energy loading stuff on to our blogs; a little time taken off to see if they all actually work is worth the effort.
