Enhancing Reader Experience with ‘Related Entries’

related-posts1It is a fact that readers visit your blog with the intention of gaining value out of the experience- the value may be anything, right from the advice that you provide in terms of software knowledge or suggested plug-ins, or the health tips that your blog gives them that would improve the reader’s lifestyle and outlook or even plain commentaries that would open the reader’s eyes to a whole new world of realities hitherto not thought of. A change in perspective could be refreshing, which in itself could be an added value.

Talking of added value, there is one thing that you could do to enhance your reader’s experience and the value that he derives out of the time spent on the blog. While some readers may visit your blog for the information value that your site provides, there may be those who may have landed up in your blog as first time visitors, perhaps through clicking a link to your post from somewhere or by using one of the search engines that could have come up with results pertaining to your blog.

In the initial stages of your blog’s lifecycle, the majority of visitors are likely to be of the latter category, where they may have been directed through a link related to their search key words. In such cases, it is important to retain those visitors and to make them stay for long in your site, rather than just let them leave after they have read the related post.

The best way to make them stay for long in your blog and add to their experience by enhancing the value that they derive is to have “Related Topics” listed in your blog. Remember, these are readers who may not be primarily interested in your blog as such, but have reached your blog searching for a topic of their interest. These readers are more likely to stick on to your blog, if they find a lot more related to their subject of interest than just the blog post that drew them in.

If, for instance, a reader reaches a post in your blog that says about an Indian city, Agra, it is possible that the reader may be interested in posts related to other Indian cities too or perhaps to cities like Agra in other countries. WordPress Plug-in on “Related Entries” would churn out a host of posts in your blog that may have been posted previously, based on key word matching. Plug-ins on Related Entries can be found here.

This list of related entries not only makes the reader stay longer in your blog but also creates an affinity in him towards your blog and converts him into a regular visitor in the long run.
